Correct credit report to improve rating

English law states that all information given to agencies / companies by their applicants must be entered into their systems correctly, and any inaccurate details can be changed or indeed deleted

So once you have received your copy of your report file, follow the advice below to ensure your details are fair and accurate.

1. If you believe a County Court Judgement has been recorded incorrectly, contact the County Court.

2. If you have paid a County court Judgement, make sure that it is shown as ‘satisfied’ on your credit report.  If it is not, then contact the County Court and get a ‘certificate of satisfaction’.  Credit Reference Agencies will be told about this with in four weeks, and will change your report accordingly.

3. If you believe your name is on the electoral roll, but this is not shown on your credit report, contact the Credit Reference Agency and ask why this is the case.  If your name is not on the electoral roll, then contact your Local Authority and ask them to add it.

4. If you can pay off any balance shown against any credit account information, contact the company concerned and ask them to contact the credit agencies to pass on relevant information.

5. If a bankrupt order against you is annulled or discharged and this is not shown on your credit report, send a copy of the ‘Order of Discharge’ or ‘Annulment certificate’ to the credit reference agencies and ask them to update your report.

6. If you have been linked to addresses you have no connection with you can ask the credit agency to delete the address link.  They WILL investigate the matter with the company who created the link.

7. If companies have searched your report more than once as a result of only one application, you may want to ask the company to delete the duplicate searches.

8. If other people who live in your home have financial information recorded on your file you can ask the agency to remove their information.  They will do so if you do not share a financial responsibility, such as a joint account, joint debt or joint tenancy with that person.

9. If a credit account has been settled, but this is not shown on your credit report, contact the company concerned and ask them to contact the credit agencies.

10. You may want to add an explanation to the information they hold (for example, why an account went overdrawn, or why you missed repayments, at a particular time.)  This explanation, called a Notice of Correction, can be a statement of up to 200 words.  Any further lender who searches your report will see the notice when they see the information it relates to.
